Following are the features of a good research
Purposiveness
The first and most vital attribute of excellent research is that it must have a Purpose that will enable us to get relevant findings. The objective of the study serves as the foundation for our procedures, influencing our methods of execution and the interpretation of our results using scientific reasoning.
Objectivity
This characteristic highlights the need of maintaining objectivity while discussing a phenomenon as a researcher. It emphasizes the use of empirical evidence rather than personal emotions or biases to explain and interpret outcomes.
For example: If we are doing research on the influence of capital structure on the profitability of enterprises, and our data shows that an increase in debt capital led to an increase in profitability of firms. Our findings are unbiased and based on facts. However, if we let our emotions or personal opinions to influence our judgment, we may argue for the prohibition of interest-based capital and disregard its potential beneficial effect on profitability. In doing so, our findings would be subjective and prejudiced.
Testability
During our research study, we formulated hypotheses to examine the link between independent and dependent variables. It is important to generate testable hypotheses, meaning that they can be empirically evaluated, to ensure the validity of our research.
Rigor
This characteristic indicates that our research project must include a strong theoretical foundation and a well-defined methodology. This will mitigate bias and enhance the accuracy of data collection and processing, hence resulting in robust and reliable study results.
Replicability
Replicability refers to the capacity to get similar findings in research studies when using comparable techniques and processes for data collecting and analysis as those employed in earlier studies. It signifies that if the same study is reproduced by different researchers, it ought to provide equivalent results.
Generalizability
This feature revealed that our study results must be acceptable and applicable worldwide. The study will be more useful and valuable if it can be generalized to a wider audience. On the other hand, it is not always easy to generalize the results of the study to all other organizations, circumstances, or places. Basic research has more generalizability as compared to applied research.
Parsimony
This feature showed that our study had to have the parsimony feature, which means it had to be done in a simple and cost-effective way. It should be easy to understand what the problems are and how to solve them in a general way. Ideas that aren't clear should be broken down into easy concepts.
Problem Solving
If we are engaging in applied research, then it is imperative that the findings provide the most effective solution to a problem.
Logical
It is essential for research to be rational. If we are going to provide a solution to a problem, then that answer need to be rational, appropriate, and simple to implement.
Innovative
Effective research must possess a quality of originality. It should provide novel insights or offer innovative solutions to address the current challenge.
